Edema During Pregnancy

By: Cassidy Hexter, RMT

Edema, or swelling of the body, can occur during any stage of pregnancy. It is caused by fluid retention in the body’s tissues, and is very common during pregnancy. During pregnancy hormone fluctuations can also contribute to edema, which may involve swelling of the hands, face, ankles, neck and other extremities. As pregnancy progresses, edema of the legs occurs in up to 40 percent of women. Edema in the legs results because of the mechanical obstruction created by the uterus and the fetus. It causes an increase in venous pressure distally causing the edema in the legs, ankles, and feet. Throughout your pregnancy your body will produce roughly 50% more blood and fluids than normal to accommodate your growing baby. This can contribute to swelling and bloating, but is important to help nourish and protect your baby.

The Dangers of Swelling

Swelling or normal edema of pregnancy is not dangerous. When does it become dangerous? If you begin to swell well into your second trimester, particularly in your hands and face, you may be developing preeclampsia. Preeclampsia typically results in high blood pressure during pregnancy. High blood pressure, bad headaches and seeing spots in front of the eyes are all other symptoms suggesting that you may have developed this condition. As your blood pressure increases your body retains more fluid and excretes protein into the urine. If you experience sudden swelling of the face and hands that results in more than a pound or two of weight gain in a short period of time, it is important you contact your health care provider. Most swelling is not the result of preeclampsia, your doctor or midwife can take prompt action to ensure your safety and that of your baby.

How can Massage therapy Help?

Secondary conditions such as carpal tunnel, numbness and tingling , thoracic outlet syndrome, sciatica, piriformis syndrome or muscle pain can occur due to the edema during pregnancy. Massage therapy is used to treat edema and relieve these symptoms. It is best to start massage treatments to help reduce the edema before any secondary conditions have time to set in. Swedish massage and lymphatic drainage encourages the drainage of fluids that are causing the swelling. Drainage techniques are used with a combination of hydro therapy and postural drainage, to help reduce the swelling. Pregnancy massage helps you relax and feel good, while helping reduce swelling and associated symptoms. Remember, while swelling is a normal part of pregnancy, there are plenty of steps you can take to minimize your discomfort and ensure the health and well being of your baby which can be discussed during your massage therapy session.
